The Perpetual Miracle

To turn to the sūrah itself. It opens by declaring that it is a muʿjizah of the Prophet (peace be upon him):

This is the greatest of the miracles of the Prophet (peace be upon him), and the most enduring. There is a hadith in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim and Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī and elsewhere in which the Prophet (peace be upon him) said that every prophet was given something, a sign by which his claim to prophecy was established, since none could counter it.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) was given many such signs: water flowing from his fingers; a tree that came to him as though drawn along tracks, to greet him; a stone that spoke and testified that he was the Prophet. But the greatest of them is the miracle of the Qur'an, because the others were bound to their moment. The splitting of the moon — who witnessed it? A few people, and it was for them to see. What remains with us today, though we know of those miracles through the hadith, is the Qur'an. The Qur'an is the living miracle. There is no time to enter upon the question of how the Qur'an is a miracle, a subject treated at length elsewhere; but this is among the greatest of the miracles of the Prophet (peace be upon him).
