About Us

Knowledge that roots you and brings you closer.

Islam Academy (islam.academy) is a free place to learn about Islam. It gathers the teaching of respected scholars into structured courses that anyone can follow, at their own pace, from anywhere, without paying anything.

What we offer

Courses. Fourteen courses and more than three hundred lessons, on the Qur’an and its commentary, the lives of the Prophets, the life of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), his Companions, the first Caliphs, belief, the foundations of practice, the four Imams, the law of inheritance, and marriage and family life. Browse all the courses.

Narration. Lessons can be listened to as well as read, section by section, so you can learn on a walk, on a commute or with your eyes closed.

Your progress. The first section of every lesson is open to all. With a free account you can open every section, mark what you have finished, and pick up exactly where you left off. My Progress shows each course and how far you have come.

Free, entirely. There are no fees, no paid tiers and no advertisements on the courses, and we don’t take donations. If you would like to help, see Support Us.

How the courses are made

Most of our courses are written renderings of recorded lectures: the scholar’s spoken teaching, carefully turned into readable chapters while keeping to its substance. Others are drawn from books. Every course has a Sources and Bibliography page that says exactly where it comes from, credits the scholars and authors by name, links to the original lectures where they are published, and recommends books for further reading.

Islam Academy is independent. Our courses have not been reviewed or endorsed by the scholars or institutions they draw on, and any shortcoming in the written rendering is ours, not theirs. Where a lesson notes that a figure or attribution differs from the sources, that note is ours too.

Our principles

Free, for good. Knowledge of the deen should never sit behind a paywall. Every course here is free and will stay free.

Accuracy. Verses of the Qur’an are quoted in the translation of Mufti Muhammad Taqi Usmani, never paraphrased from memory. Hadith are cited only when we have verified them against their sources. When a speaker’s wording needs a correction or a note, we keep what was said and add a footnote rather than silently changing it.

Faithfulness. We present what the scholars taught, in their order and with their emphasis, and we do not add opinions of our own.

Learning, not rulings. The courses are for learning. They are not fatwas, and they are no substitute for asking a qualified scholar about your own situation. For questions about Islam, you can ask at fatwacentre.org/ask-a-question.
