Strike the Ground With Your Foot

And then Allah (swt) says: fa-stajabnā lah — so We answered him. Allah (swt) accepted the duʿāʾ of Ayyūb (peace be upon him). How did it happen? Allah (swt) told him:

Strike the ground with your foot: this is a spring of water to wash in, cool, and a refreshing drink. So he was commanded to strike the ground with his foot, and water came out. He was ordered by Allah (swt) to wash his body with that water, so that it would heal him and purify him from the outside, and to drink it, so that it would heal him from the inside. So that restored the health of Ayyūb.

And the ayah says: and We gave him back his family, and the like of them along with them, as a mercy from Us. So Allah (swt) gave him back his family — whether by reviving the dead or by providing him with new members of his family, Allah knows best — but he had the equal of what he had before, and even better. So now his family was restored.

What about his wealth? We find that in a hadith narrated by al-Bukhārī. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said that while Ayyūb was bathing, naked, Allah (swt) sent down upon him grasshoppers made of gold, falling over him, and Ayyūb began gathering them up and collecting them. Allah (swt) said to Ayyūb: is it not I who provide for you? So why are you gathering all of this? He said: O Allah, this is Your mercy, and I want more of it. It was a miracle: Allah (swt) provided him with grasshoppers made of gold, as a reward for the patience of His servant Ayyūb (peace be upon him).
