The Dream Fulfilled

Now all of them moved. They took their belongings — everything they had — and set out for Egypt to answer the invitation of Yūsuf (peace be upon him). Yūsuf had prepared to meet his family as soon as they arrived.

Then, when they entered upon Yūsuf, he took his parents to himself and said: enter Egypt, if Allah wills, in security.

And he had a throne. Yūsuf was sitting on a high throne, and he raised his father and his mother to sit with him on the throne. And then all of them — the father, the mother and the eleven brothers — made sujūd to Yūsuf (peace be upon him), fulfilling the dream he had seen as a child. The end of Sūrat Yūsuf fulfils the dream at the beginning of Sūrat Yūsuf, and between them lies a very long span of life. Some scholars have put it at thirty years, some at twenty-five, some at eighty years; Allah knows best. But this is the fulfilment of the dream of Yūsuf:

I saw eleven stars, and the sun and the moon, prostrating to me. The eleven stars were his brothers, the sun was his father, and the moon was his mother.

And he said: O my father, this is the interpretation of my dream of old; my Lord has made it come true. And these are the words of Yūsuf: He was indeed good to me when He took me out of the prison and brought you here out of the Bedouin life, after Shayṭān had sown enmity between me and my brothers. Certainly, my Lord is Most Courteous and Kind to whom He wills; truly, He alone is the All-Knowing, the All-Wise.
