Lūṭ, and the Town Overturned

After that the angels go from him, having given the glad tidings, to his nephew, to Lūṭ (peace be upon him); and subḥānAllāh, that whole discussion takes place with Lūṭ (peace be upon him). He is of course worried, thinking that his people, who were homosexuals, would attack the angels; so he speaks of the girls of the region and so forth. But these people say: do not be troubled, everything is taken care of. And now they are to be destroyed. Allāhu akbar.

Allah says fa-akhadhat-humu al-ṣayḥatu mushriqīn: it was the morning time, and there was a shriek, a very loud shriek. Fa-jaʿalnā ʿāliyahā sāfilahā: We put the upper part below; We turned that entire coastal region, wherever it was, upside down. And after that they are dead by then; there is nothing, there is nothing. It is said that Jibrīl (peace be upon him) came — according to some narration he mentions Jibrīl (peace be upon him) came — and with the corner of his wing took that whole area up, as one takes up a whole segment, as one takes pieces of grass and replants them; he took it up, turned it upside down and flung it down. By that none is alive. But just to show the anger of Allah, Allah says wa amṭarnā ʿalayhim ḥijāratan min sijjīl: then He showered upon them stones; and in other places these too are named, to show a real dislike for those people.
