The Verses of the Book

Again the first part of this chapter opens with Alif Lām Rā, with the ḥurūf muqaṭṭaʿāt, and then tilka āyātu al-kitābi wa qurʾānin mubīn:

These are the verses of the Book and the clear Qur'an. The word Qurʾān itself may come from the word qaraʾa, which means to read: that which is read, the maqrūʾ, that which is read. That is one meaning. The other is that it may come from the sense of joining together, since all the verses are gathered together. So the literal meaning of Qurʾān is either to be joined together or to be recited, and it applies in both senses.
