Guidance on Marital Disputes and Reconciliation

In verses 127-130 of Surah An-Nisa, Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala provides crucial guidance on handling marital challenges and the quest for reconciliation. These verses address complex situations that may arise in marriage and offer divine wisdom for navigating them.

Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala begins by addressing questions concerning women's rights:

وَيَسْتَفْتُونَكَ فِي النِّسَاءِ قُلِ اللَّهُ يُفْتِيكُمْ فِيهِنَّ

“They ask you for a ruling concerning women. Say, 'Allah gives you ruling about them...'" (4:127)”

This verse emphasizes that guidance regarding women's rights comes directly from Allah, not from cultural practices or human opinions. This establishes that Islamic regulations concerning marital relationships have divine origin and aim to establish justice and compassion.

When addressing marital discord, Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala acknowledges that reconciliation is the preferred outcome:

وَالصُّلْحُ خَيْرٌ

“Settlement is better." (4:128)”

The emphasis on reconciliation (صُلْح) demonstrates Islam's prioritization of preserving the marital bond whenever possible. However, this reconciliation must be based on fairness and mutual agreement, not coercion or continued oppression.

Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala also acknowledges the psychological reality that perfect equality of affection between multiple wives is humanly impossible:

وَلَن تَسْتَطِيعُوا أَن تَعْدِلُوا بَيْنَ النِّسَاءِ وَلَوْ حَرَصْتُمْ فَلَا تَمِيلُوا كُلَّ الْمَيْلِ فَتَذَرُوهَا كَالْمُعَلَّقَةِ

“You shall never be able to maintain real equality between wives, even if you are eager to do so. So, do not lean totally (towards one) and leave the other as suspended." (4:129)”

This verse provides crucial guidance for those in polygynous marriages. While emotional equity may be unattainable despite one's best intentions, the requirement is to avoid completely neglecting any wife to the point where she becomes كَالْمُعَلَّقَةِ (like one suspended) – neither married in a meaningful sense nor free to remarry. This balanced approach acknowledges human limitations while setting clear ethical boundaries.

For situations where reconciliation proves impossible, Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala provides assurance of His provision for both parties:

وَإِن يَتَفَرَّقَا يُغْنِ اللَّهُ كُلًّا مِّن سَعَتِهِ وَكَانَ اللَّهُ وَاسِعًا حَكِيمًا

“If they separate, Allah shall, through His capacity, make each of them need-free. Allah is All-Encompassing, All-Wise." (4:130)”

This verse offers profound consolation for those facing the difficult decision of divorce. The promise that Allah will enrich each party from His abundance (سَعَتِهِ) removes the fear of destitution that often keeps people trapped in dysfunctional marriages. Allah's attributes mentioned here – All-Encompassing (وَاسِعًا) and All-Wise (حَكِيمًا) .
