A Constricted Life
There is a verse which, from the first time it is truly dwelt upon, has an impact that does not fade. Allah says in verse 124:
وَمَنْ أَعْرَضَ عَن ذِكْرِى فَإِنَّ لَهُۥ مَعِيشَةً ضَنكًا وَنَحْشُرُهُۥ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ أَعْمَىٰ
“As for the one who turns away from My message, he shall have a straitened life, and We shall raise him blind on the Day of Judgment.”” (20:124)
The one who stays away from My remembrance, the one who ignores My remembrance, the one who shuns My remembrance, will have a hard life. SubḥānAllāh. So many people have come and said: I have the money, I have everything, I have material means — but I have a problem in my heart. Not a cardiological problem, not a heart condition of that kind: a spiritual problem. I cannot sleep. I have no respite. I have no contentment. I have no satisfaction. I have no tranquillity.
The counsel is simple: begin some dhikr of Allah. Remember Allah throughout your day, in different ways. Otherwise, Allah says, yours will be a difficult life — maʿīshatan ḍankā, a constricted life.
