Loosen the Knot From My Tongue
Verse 26 then gives the famous duʿāʾ which anybody who has difficulty in articulating or speaking should recite. It is also a duʿāʾ for those who have a stuttering problem, and for those who cannot gather their thoughts, who perhaps have difficulty in concentrating and in articulating their point well:
قَالَ رَبِّ ٱشْرَحْ لِى صَدْرِى وَيَسِّرْ لِىٓ أَمْرِى وَٱحْلُلْ عُقْدَةً مِّن لِّسَانِى يَفْقَهُوا۟ قَوْلِى وَٱجْعَل لِّى وَزِيرًا مِّنْ أَهْلِى
“He said, “My Lord, put my heart at peace for me, and make my task easy for me and remove the knot from my tongue, so that they may understand my speech. And make for me an assistant from my own family,” (20:25–29)
Rabbi-shraḥ lī ṣadrī, wa-yassir lī amrī, wa-ḥlul ʿuqdatan min lisānī, yafqahū qawlī: expand for me my breast, make my matter easy for me, and remove this knot from my tongue, so that they can understand me.
When one is going into a discussion in which one hopes to make amends, or is trying to persuade somebody to do the right thing, this is the perfect duʿāʾ. Even for one who has no stutter, it is a good duʿāʾ to make wherever a message is to be delivered. It is a very good duʿāʾ. Wa-jʿal lī wazīran min ahlī: and appoint for me a minister from my family — that is, Hārūn (peace be upon him); though that lies outside the purpose of what is being said here.
