They Accused Him of Insanity
And they started accusing him — and that will happen to every Nabī. They accused him of insanity. They said:
إِن نَّقُولُ إِلَّا ٱعْتَرَىٰكَ بَعْضُ ءَالِهَتِنَا بِسُوٓءٍ ۗ قَالَ إِنِّىٓ أُشْهِدُ ٱللَّهَ وَٱشْهَدُوٓا۟ أَنِّى بَرِىٓءٌ مِّمَّا تُشْرِكُونَ
“We do not say except that some of our gods have subjected you to some evil.” He said, “I make Allah my witness, and you bear witness that I have nothing to do with what you take as gods” (11:54)
In naqūlu illā-ʿtarāka baʿḍu ālihatinā bi-sūʾ: all that we say is that some of our gods have seized you with madness. They said: our gods have caused you insanity; you're mad. And they accused him of safāhah, and they accused him of lying.
قَالَ ٱلْمَلَأُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِن قَوْمِهِۦٓ إِنَّا لَنَرَىٰكَ فِى سَفَاهَةٍ وَإِنَّا لَنَظُنُّكَ مِنَ ٱلْكَـٰذِبِينَ
“Said the chiefs of his people who disbelieved, “Indeed, we see you in folly, and we believe you are one of the liars.”” (7:66)
Qāla al-malaʾu alladhīna kafarū min qawmihi innā la-narāka fī safāhatin wa innā la-naẓunnuka min al-kādhibīn. The leaders of those who disbelieved among his people said: verily, we see you in foolishness, and verily, we think you are one of the liars. And notice: who are the ones who are saying this? Al-malaʾ, the leaders.
