He Is Not of Your Family

We use words — we use words to mean some things, but Islam comes and gives them a new definition. Ṣalāh, for example, had the definition of supplication before Islam; but then Islam gave it maʿnā iṣṭilāḥī, it gave it the meaning of the ṣalāh. The meaning of happiness, for example: we think of happiness in a certain way, but Islam defined happiness in a different way. Family has a definition among us. What is it? Your blood relatives. The blood relation: that's what we call family. And Nūḥ is considering his son to be part of his family, because he's his blood son. But Allah (swt) is now going to teach Nūḥ the true meaning of family. So Allah (swt) is telling Nūḥ:

Qāla yā Nūḥu innahu laysa min ahlik, innahu ʿamalun ghayru ṣāliḥ, fa-lā tasʾalni mā laysa laka bihi ʿilm, innī aʿiẓuka an takūna min al-jāhilīn. Allah (swt) said: O Nūḥ, surely he is not of your family; verily, his work is unrighteous. Because his work is unrighteous, he is not part of your family anymore. He is your family if he is a righteous Muslim.

Nūḥ understood, and he said: qāla rabbi innī aʿūdhu bika an asʾalaka mā laysa lī bihi ʿilm — O my Lord, I seek refuge with You from asking You that of which I have no knowledge. And then he made the duʿāʾ: wa illā taghfir lī wa tarḥamnī akun min al-khāsirīn — and unless You forgive me and have mercy on me, I would indeed be one of the losers.
