Allah's Promise to Believers of Succession on Earth
Among the most profound promises Allah (swt) makes to the believers in Surah An-Nur is the covenant of succession and establishment on earth. This carries immense significance for Muslims across generations and serves as a source of hope during periods of difficulty and trial.
Allah (swt) declares in verse 55:
وَعَدَ اللَّهُ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مِنكُمْ وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ لَيَسْتَخْلِفَنَّهُمْ فِي الْأَرْضِ كَمَا اسْتَخْلَفَ الَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ وَلَيُمَكِّنَنَّ لَهُمْ دِينَهُمُ الَّذِي ارْتَضَىٰ لَهُمْ وَلَيُبَدِّلَنَّهُم مِّن بَعْدِ خَوْفِهِمْ أَمْنًا
“Allah has promised those of you who believe and do good deeds that He will certainly make them (His) vicegerents in the land, as He made those before them, and will certainly establish for them their religion which He has chosen for them, and will certainly give them peace in place of fear in which they were.”
This divine pledge carries multiple dimensions. First, Allah (swt) promises istikhlāf (succession/vicegerency) on earth to those who fulfill two fundamental conditions: faith and righteous deeds. Second, Allah (swt) promises to establish their religion firmly. Third, He pledges to transform their state from fear to safety and security.
What is particularly noteworthy is that this promise was fulfilled in the most literal sense during the early days of Islam. The entire Arabian Peninsula came under Islamic governance within a remarkably short period during the Prophet Muhammad's (peace be upon him) lifetime. This historical reality serves as tangible evidence of Allah's fulfillment of His promise.
However, Allah (swt) attaches conditions to this promise, as He continues in the same verse:
يَعْبُدُونَنِي لَا يُشْرِكُونَ بِي شَيْئًا ۚ وَمَن كَفَرَ بَعْدَ ذَٰلِكَ فَأُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْفَاسِقُونَ
“They worship Me, not ascribing any partner to Me. And those who disbelieve after that, they are the sinners.”
The condition is pure monotheistic worship. This explains why, historically, when Muslims deviated from pure monotheism and sincere worship, their political and social power declined.
In verses 56-57, Allah (swt) reinforces the path to success:
وَأَقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَآتُوا الزَّكَاةَ وَأَطِيعُوا الرَّسُولَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ
“Establish prayer and pay zakah, and obey the Messenger, so that you may be favored with mercy.”
The path to Allah's mercy and the fulfillment of His promise lies in establishing prayer, giving zakat, and obeying the Messenger (peace be upon him). These fundamental acts of worship and obedience form the foundation for Allah's promise of succession to be realized.
The surah draws toward its conclusion with important reminders about proper etiquette with the Prophet (peace be upon him). In verse 63, Allah (swt) instructs:
لَّا تَجْعَلُوا دُعَاءَ الرَّسُولِ بَيْنَكُمْ كَدُعَاءِ بَعْضِكُم بَعْضًا
“Do not make your calling the Messenger among yourselves like your calling one another.”
This verse establishes the principle that believers must maintain special reverence and adab (etiquette) when addressing the Prophet (peace be upon him), distinguishing how they call upon him from how they address one another.
Surah An-Nur concludes with a powerful reminder of Allah's complete knowledge and sovereignty in verse 64:
أَلَا إِنَّ لِلَّهِ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ ۖ قَدْ يَعْلَمُ مَا أَنتُمْ عَلَيْهِ وَيَوْمَ يُرْجَعُونَ إِلَيْهِ فَيُنَبِّئُهُم بِمَا عَمِلُوا ۗ وَاللَّهُ بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ عَلِيمٌ
“Beware that to Allah belongs all that is in the heavens and the earth. He knows the condition in which you are at present; and the Day on which they will be returned to Him, He will tell them what they did. Allah knows everything well.”
This final verse serves as a profound reminder that Allah (swt) knows our innermost conditions, records all our deeds, and will ultimately hold us accountable for them on the Day of Judgment. The metaphor of Allah's complete record being like a "hard drive" emphasizes that nothing escapes His knowledge and everything is preserved with perfect accuracy for the final reckoning.
