12. Etiquette of Entering Homes and Seeking Permission
The Qur'an in Surah An-Nur establishes detailed guidelines regarding domestic privacy and interpersonal boundaries. These verses outline the etiquette of entering homes and the proper protocols for seeking permission, reflecting Islam's emphasis on respecting personal space and preserving modesty.
Allah (swt) states:
“O you who believe, do not enter houses other than your own houses until you seek permission and greet their occupants.”
This verse establishes two fundamental aspects of Islamic social etiquette: seeking permission before entering others' homes and offering greetings upon entry. The Arabic word "تَسْتَأْنِسُوا" (tasta'nisū) connotes not merely seeking formal permission but doing so in a gentle, cordial manner that puts the occupants at ease. This creates a buffer that protects the privacy of households and prevents unexpected intrusions.
The importance of these guidelines becomes clearer when considering the broader context of Islamic teachings on modesty and privacy. Homes are sanctuaries where individuals, especially women, may not be in full hijab or may be in states of dress not appropriate for non-mahram individuals to witness. Unannounced entry could lead to embarrassment or violations of Islamic standards of modesty.
Allah (swt) further instructs:
“If you find no one in them, do not enter them until permission is given to you. And if it is said to you, 'Go back,' then go back. It is purer for you.”
This verse emphasizes that permission is not merely a formality but a substantive requirement. Even if a home appears empty, entry without explicit permission remains prohibited. Additionally, if entry is denied, believers must accept this without resentment or insistence, as this restraint is described as "أَزْكَى
