10. The Incident of Slander Against Aisha (Ifk)

Following these rulings on accusations of impropriety, Surah An-Nur addresses one of the most painful incidents in early Islamic history—the slander against the Mother of Believers, Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her). This incident, known as the ifk (slander), occurred when hypocrites spread false rumors accusing Aisha of impropriety during a journey when she was accidentally left behind while searching for her lost necklace.

Beginning with verse 11, Allah (swt) directly addresses this incident:

إِنَّ الَّذِينَ جَاءُوا بِالْإِفْكِ عُصْبَةٌ مِّنكُمْ ۚ لَا تَحْسَبُوهُ شَرًّا لَّكُم ۖ بَلْ هُوَ خَيْرٌ لَّكُمْ

“Those who have brought the false (imputation) are a gang among you. Do not think it is bad for you; rather, it is good for you.”

This incident became a severe test for the Prophet (peace be upon him), his family, and the entire Muslim community. When Aisha returned to Madinah accompanied by Safwan ibn Mu'attal (who had found her after she was left behind), the hypocrites, led by Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul, seized the opportunity to spread rumors and accusations. Unfortunately, even some sincere believers were momentarily caught in this web of misinformation.

The verses that follow provide divine guidance on how Muslims should respond to such rumors and accusations. Allah (swt) revealed ten verses specifically addressing this incident, which represents the first time in any divine scripture that so many verses were revealed to declare the innocence of a specific individual. This divine exoneration of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) is a testament to her high status and the love Allah has for her.

In verse 12, Allah (swt) questions why the believers did not have a better opinion of their brother and sister in faith:

لَّوْلَا إِذْ سَمِعْتُمُوهُ ظَنَّ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتُ بِأَنفُسِهِمْ خَيْرًا وَقَالُوا هَٰذَا إِفْكٌ مُّبِينٌ

“Why, when you heard of it, the believing men and the believing women did not think well about their own selves, and (why did they not) say: 'This is a manifest lie'?”

Allah (swt) rebukes those who spread the rumors without proper evidence and reminds the believers that propagating such accusations requires four witnesses, which the accusers could not produce:
