8. The True Nature of Isa | Verses: Maryam 19:35-40

Following the narrative of Isa's miraculous birth, the Qur'an directly addresses misconceptions about his nature and status:

This verse establishes the Islamic position on the nature of Isa (peace be upon him) with absolute clarity. Allah, being transcendent above all creation, does not beget children in any manner. The miraculous birth of Isa without a father was simply an example of Allah's creative command – the same "Be" command through which Adam was created without either parent.

The Qur'an then quotes Prophet Isa himself, affirming the fundamental truth of Allah's oneness:

These words directly attributed to Isa establish that he called people to the worship of Allah alone, and claimed no divinity for himself. The statement "Allah is my Lord and your Lord" unequivocally demonstrates his status as a servant of Allah, not as divine or as Allah's literal son.

The Qur'an then mentions that despite this clear message, various groups disputed concerning Isa:

These groups developed various distorted beliefs about Isa, elevating him beyond his status as a prophet and servant of Allah. Some claimed he was divine, others that he was the son of God, and yet others invented a concept of trinity – all of which directly contradicted Isa's own teachings about Allah's absolute oneness.

The Qur'an warns those who attributed divinity to Isa of the consequences they will face on the Day of Judgment. They will see and hear with remarkable clarity on that day, but for those who persisted in error despite receiving guidance, it will be too late:
