4. Concluding Themes of Surah Al-Kahf
After presenting the four major narratives that illustrate the tension between faith and materialism, Surah Al-Kahf concludes with powerful verses addressing fundamental truths about the Hereafter, divine mercy, and the infinite nature of Allah's knowledge.
Allah makes a clear contrast between the people of Paradise and the people of Hellfire:
أَفَحَسِبَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا أَن يَتَّخِذُوا عِبَادِي مِن دُونِي أَوْلِيَاءَ ۚ إِنَّا أَعْتَدْنَا جَهَنَّمَ لِلْكَافِرِينَ نُزُلًا
“Do those who disbelieve think that they can take My servants as guardians besides Me? Surely We have prepared Hell for the disbelievers as an entertainment.”
For the believers, however, Allah promises the highest gardens of Paradise:
إِنَّ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ كَانَتْ لَهُمْ جَنَّاتُ الْفِرْدَوْسِ نُزُلًا. خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا لَا يَبْغُونَ عَنْهَا حِوَلًا
“Surely those who believe and do righteous deeds, for them there are gardens of Firdaus as an entertainment, where they will live forever without desiring any change therefrom.”
Among the most sobering verses in this conclusion is the one that identifies those whose deeds are rendered completely worthless, despite their thinking they are doing good:
قُلْ هَلْ نُنَبِّئُكُم بِالْأَخْسَرِينَ أَعْمَالًا. الَّذِينَ ضَلَّ سَعْيُهُمْ فِي الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا وَهُمْ يَحْسَبُونَ أَنَّهُمْ يُحْسِنُونَ صُنْعًا
“Say, 'Shall we tell you about the greatest losers in respect of deeds? Those whose effort is wasted in the worldly life, while they think they are doing good.'”
This powerful warning applies to those who may have sincerity but are acting contrary to Islam, or those who lack sincerity altogether. Their deeds, despite apparent righteousness, become worthless. This verse serves as a profound reminder that both correct intention and correct action according to divine guidance are necessary for deeds to be accepted.
The surah concludes with two profound verses that illustrate the infinite nature of Allah's words and knowledge:
قُل لَّوْ كَانَ الْبَحْرُ مِدَادًا لِّكَلِمَاتِ رَبِّي لَنَفِدَ الْبَحْرُ قَبْلَ أَن تَنفَدَ كَلِمَاتُ رَبِّي وَلَوْ جِئْنَا بِمِثْلِهِ مَدَدًا
“Say, 'If the sea were to become ink for the Words of my Lord, the sea would be exhausted before the Words of my Lord are exhausted, even if We brought another sea to its aid.'”
