They Planned, and Allah Planned

And Allah (swt) says in Sūrat Āl ʿImrān: wa makarū wa makara Allāhu wa-Allāhu khayru al-mākirīn — and they, the disbelievers, plotted to kill ʿĪsā, and Allah plotted too; and Allah is the best of those who plot.

Makr means when you plan in secret: when you're whispering, hiding in a room, making a plan — that is called makr. They think that they are doing makr; they think that they're concealing their plan, and nobody knows their plan. But there is One who knows their plan, and that is Allah (swt). Allah knows their plan; so Allah is khayru al-mākirīn, Allah is the best of planners — because Allah, when He makes His plan, His plan can be secret and concealed, if Allah doesn't want anybody to know it. So they made their plan, but Allah made His plan; and the plan of Allah (swt) is what will go through.
