He Kept It in His Heart
۞ قَالُوٓا۟ إِن يَسْرِقْ فَقَدْ سَرَقَ أَخٌ لَّهُۥ مِن قَبْلُ ۚ فَأَسَرَّهَا يُوسُفُ فِى نَفْسِهِۦ وَلَمْ يُبْدِهَا لَهُمْ ۚ قَالَ أَنتُمْ شَرٌّ مَّكَانًا ۖ وَٱللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا تَصِفُونَ
“They said, “If he commits theft, (there is nothing surprising, because) his other brother had committed theft earlier.” Yūsuf kept it (his reaction) to himself and did not reveal it to them. He said (in his heart), “You are even worse in position. Allah knows best of what you allege.”” (12:77)
They said: if he steals, there was a brother of his who did steal before him. Yūsuf held those emotions in his heart and did not speak. But these things Yūsuf kept in himself, revealing nothing to them. He did not respond to this. And then he said, also silently: you are in a worse position, and Allah knows best the truth of what you assert.
They were speaking to Yūsuf and telling him that Yūsuf had stolen before. Yūsuf knew the truth. He said: Allah knows best. But he did not show it to them.
