6. Paradise for the Righteous

After describing the terrifying events of the Day of Judgment, Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala turns our attention to the blissful abode prepared for the righteous believers. This contrast serves to inspire hope and motivate righteousness while continuing to warn against heedlessness.

The description of Paradise begins with a beautiful verse highlighting the state of its inhabitants:

The term shughul (activities) refers to the joyful occupations and pleasures that will engross the believers in Paradise. The word fakihun indicates that they will be in a state of delight and happiness as they engage in these activities. This presents a stark contrast to the state of terror and regret experienced by the people of Hellfire.

Allah then provides more specific details about the nature of this bliss:

This verse reveals the companionship that believers will enjoy in Paradise. The azwaj (spouses) mentioned here indicates that marriage relationships will continue in the Hereafter. This is one of the most beautiful aspects of Paradise – that husband and wife who were righteous in this world will be reunited in eternal bliss. They will recline together on ornate couches (ara'ik) under pleasant shades, enjoying perfect comfort and intimacy.

Indeed, nearly every depiction of Paradise includes mention of spouses, emphasizing that believers will share their eternal reward with their life partners. While one may visit parents or children in Paradise, the primary companionship will be with one's spouse. This underscores the importance of nurturing a righteous marital relationship in this world, as it has the potential to continue eternally.

The pleasures of Paradise continue to be detailed:

The inhabitants of Paradise will have access to every variety of fruit for their enjoyment, and beyond this, anything they desire or request will be immediately provided. This verse illustrates the comprehensive nature of Paradise's pleasures – they include not only what Allah has prepared, but also whatever the individual believer might personally wish for.

The climax of Paradise's blessings comes in the form of a special greeting:

This verse represents the ultimate honor bestowed upon the people of Paradise – direct greetings of peace from Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala Himself. This divine acknowledgment surpasses all material pleasures and stands as the greatest reward possible.
