Creation in Pairs as Evidence of Divine Power

Among the numerous signs of Allah's perfect wisdom and creative power highlighted in Surah Ya-Sin is the remarkable system of pairs that exists throughout creation. This concept is succinctly yet profoundly expressed in verse 36, which carries deep implications about the nature of our universe:

This verse deserves special attention as it reveals a scientific miracle of the Quran. Allah declares His transcendence and perfection by highlighting how He has created all things in pairs across three distinct categories.

The first category—"what the earth grows"—refers to the plant kingdom. While the concept of humans and animals existing as male and female pairs was well-known throughout human history, the understanding that plants also reproduce through a system of male and female characteristics was not common knowledge at the time of revelation. Modern botany confirms that most plants contain both male and female reproductive organs, or exist as separate male and female plants of the same species, requiring cross-pollination for reproduction.

The second category—"of themselves"—refers to human beings and animals. This pairing is more obvious as males and females exist across nearly all animal species, and human reproduction depends on the union of man and woman.

The third category—"what they do not know"—is perhaps the most remarkable aspect of this verse, as it points to pairings beyond human knowledge at the time of revelation. This prophetic statement anticipated discoveries made centuries later about the dualistic nature of creation at the subatomic level. Modern physics has revealed that matter itself consists of pairs—electrons and positrons, particles and antiparticles. Even at the most fundamental level of creation, we find this principle of duality.

What makes this verse particularly miraculous is that it was revealed in a historical context lacking sophisticated scientific instruments or knowledge of atomic or cellular structures. The Quran's declaration about the existence of pairs in things unknown to people of that era could only come from the Creator who designed these systems.

This verse also uses the term "سُبْحَانَ" (Subhana) which denotes Allah's transcendence and perfection. The choice of this term in connection with the creation of pairs emphasizes that this system of duality throughout creation—from the macroscopic to the microscopic level—demonstrates Allah's perfect wisdom and design.

The creation in pairs serves as a profound reminder of Allah's creative power and knowledge that encompasses all things—those apparent to us and those beyond our perception. It invites reflection on the harmony and complementarity inherent in creation. Just as everything in creation has its pair or complement, humanity itself is completed through recognition of and submission to its Creator.

This systematic pairing throughout creation stands as a powerful sign of divine unity, wisdom, and purpose. Rather than occurring randomly, this universal pattern reflects intentional design by the One who possesses perfect knowledge of all creation.
