9. Sending Blessings upon the Prophet

One of the most beautiful and spiritually significant verses in Surah Al-Ahzab instructs believers about their duty toward the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Allah Himself informs us of the special status of His Messenger by revealing that both He and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet:

This verse establishes a remarkable spiritual connection. Allah (swt) Himself sends blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), as do the angels, and now believers are commanded to join in this divine practice. The command is powerful—it is not merely suggested but required of the believers to send blessings (salawat) and greetings (salam) upon him.

The significance of this verse extends beyond ritual practice. It reveals the exceptional position of the Prophet (peace be upon him) in the divine order. No other human has been mentioned in the Quran as receiving blessings from Allah Himself and His angels. This demonstrates the Prophet's unique status in the sight of Allah (swt).

There is a profound background to the revelation of this verse. As narrated by Abu Talha (may Allah be pleased with him), one day the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) approached his Companions with his face beaming with happiness. They inquired about the reason for his exceptional joy. The Prophet (peace be upon him) informed them that an angel had come to him with a special message from Allah (swt): "Would you be pleased to know that Allah has decreed that anyone who sends one blessing upon you will receive ten blessings from Allah, and anyone who invokes one peace upon you will receive ten invocations of peace from Allah?"

The Prophet's happiness was not for himself but for his Ummah (community). He rejoiced because this represented a tremendous opportunity for the believers to attain divine rewards and blessings through a simple yet profound act of devotion.

Friday holds special significance for sending blessings upon the Prophet (peace be upon him). It is highly recommended to increase one's salawat on Fridays, particularly during two specific time periods: after Asr prayer (late afternoon) and on Thursday night after Maghrib prayer (which is considered the beginning of the Islamic Friday). Dedicating at least ten to fifteen minutes during these times to send blessings upon the Prophet (peace be upon him) is a practice rooted in prophetic tradition.

The act of sending blessings upon the Prophet (peace be upon him) carries multiple spiritual benefits. It represents an acknowledgment of his role as Allah's Messenger, expresses gratitude for his sacrifice in delivering the divine message, and maintains a spiritual connection with him. Furthermore, as indicated by the hadith, it is a means of attaining Allah's blessings and mercy.

This verse thus establishes a beautiful cycle of blessings: Allah blesses His Prophet, the angels join in, believers participate through their salawat, and Allah in turn multiplies His blessings upon those believers. Through this practice, the Muslim community maintains a living connection with their Prophet (peace be upon him) across time and space, embodying their love and respect for him in their daily spiritual practice.
