2. Special Status of the Mothers of Believers
The special status of the Mothers of the Believers emerges from a significant historical context that Allah (swt) addresses directly in Surah Al-Ahzab. After several military victories and the subsequent expansion of Islam, some of the Prophet's wives requested an increase in their monthly and yearly stipends, as their only source of income came from what the Prophet (peace be upon him) provided. This request prompted the revelation of these profound verses that established their unique position and responsibilities.
Allah (swt) begins by offering them a choice that reveals their elevated status:
“O Prophet, say to your wives, 'If you intend (to have) the worldly life and its embellishment, then come on, and I shall give you some valuable gift, and release you in a handsome manner.'" (33:28)”
This verse presented the wives with a profound choice: they could either choose the worldly life with its adornments, in which case the Prophet (peace be upon him) would provide them with wealth and divorce them honorably, or they could choose Allah, His Messenger, and the hereafter, for which Allah had prepared a much greater reward. This choice underscored that their relationship with the Prophet (peace be upon him) was not merely a marital relationship but one centered on faith and spiritual companionship.
For those who chose Allah and His Messenger, a special promise followed:
“And whoever from among you remains obedient to Allah and His Messenger and does good deeds, We shall give her twice her reward, and We have prepared for her a prestigious provision." (33:31)”
This divine promise of doubled reward highlighted their exceptional status, while simultaneously establishing their heightened responsibility. With elevated status came elevated accountability, as Allah warned them:
“O wives of the Prophet, whoever from among you commits a clearly shameful act, the punishment will be doubled for her." (33:30)”
Allah then outlined specific directives for the Mothers of the Believers, establishing the standard of conduct befitting their status. They were instructed:
“So do not be too soft in your speech, lest someone having disease in his heart should develop fancies (about you); and do speak with appropriate words." (33:32)”
The instruction to avoid speaking in an alluring or overly soft manner protected them from those with diseased hearts who might develop improper desires. Instead, they were commanded to speak in a straightforward, dignified manner.
While some scholars have debated whether these directives applied exclusively to the Mothers of the Believers or to all Muslim women, the underlying principles clearly extend to all believing women. The elevated status of the Prophet's household serves as an exemplar for the entire Muslim community, establishing standards of dignity, modesty, and faith-centered living that remain relevant for all times.
