14. Reflecting on the Prophet's Message
In the concluding section of Surah Saba, verses 34:46-54, Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala presents a powerful invitation to the disbelievers to engage in genuine reflection about the message brought by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). This reflection is meant to break through the layers of cultural opposition and tribal prejudice that prevented many from accepting the truth.
Allah begins with a profound call to mindful contemplation:
“Say, 'I give you just one advice: that you stand up for Allah's sake in pairs and individually, then reflect. There is no madness in your fellow (Muhammad). He is none but a warner to you before (the coming of) a severe punishment.”
This verse contains a remarkable methodology for discovering truth. Allah instructs people to "stand up for Allah" - meaning to rise above personal interests and biases, to approach the matter with sincerity and genuine concern for truth. This standing should be done "in pairs and individually," suggesting both collaborative and personal reflection, ensuring that one's judgment is not merely following the crowd but represents genuine conviction.
The object of this reflection is to consider whether Muhammad (peace be upon him) shows any signs of madness or deception. Allah directs people to examine the Prophet's character, history, and message objectively. Those who knew Muhammad recognized him as al-Amīn (the trustworthy one) before his prophethood. How could such a person suddenly become a fabricator of lies against Allah?
The verse emphasizes that Muhammad (peace be upon him) is simply a warner, alerting humanity to an impending punishment. His message is not for personal gain or glory but out of compassion for humanity.
Allah continues by addressing a common objection about seeking payment:
“Say, 'Whatever fee I might have asked from you is yours. My fee is with Allah only, and He is witness over everything.”
This powerful statement removes any suspicion of material motivation behind the Prophet's mission. Unlike many who claim to guide others for worldly gain, the Prophet sought no payment, wealth, or position from his people. His reward was with Allah alone, establishing the purest possible intention.
The final verses describe the ultimate barrier between the disbelievers and what they desire:
“And a barrier will be placed between them and what they desire, as was done with their counterparts earlier. They were in a disquieting doubt indeed.”
