Juz 22: Al-Aḥzāb 31 to Yā Sīn 27
Section 3 of 18 · Tafsir of the Qur’an · Mufti Abdul Rahman Mangera
3. Virtues and Responsibilities of the Prophet's Wives
Following Allah's guidance to the Mothers of Believers regarding their speech and general conduct, further instructions establish their unique status and special responsibilities. These directives emphasize their exceptional role in the Muslim community while outlining the corresponding duties that accompany such an honor.
وَقَرْنَ فِي بُيُوتِكُنَّ وَلَا تَبَرَّجْنَ تَبَرُّجَ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ الْأُولَىٰ
“And stay in your homes, and do not display yourselves as was the display of the days of ignorance." (33:33)”
Allah commands the wives of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to remain in their homes unless there is a genuine necessity to go outside. This directive establishes the principle that their primary domain should be their households, from where they could fulfill their unique role as teachers and exemplars for the believing community. The command is coupled with a prohibition against tabarruj (displaying oneself immodestly), specifically referencing the practices of jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic ignorance) when women would display themselves without proper concern for modesty or dignity.
This instruction is followed by a series of commands that further establish their responsibilities:
وَأَقِمْنَ الصَّلَاةَ وَآتِينَ الزَّكَاةَ وَأَطِعْنَ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ إِنَّمَا يُرِيدُ اللَّهُ لِيُذْهِبَ عَنكُمُ الرِّجْسَ أَهْلَ الْبَيْتِ وَيُطَهِّرَكُمْ تَطْهِيرًا
“And establish prayer and give zakah and obey Allah and His Messenger. Allah only intends to remove from you the impurity, O people of the [Prophet's] household, and to purify you with [extensive] purification." (33:33)”
This verse encompasses four primary obligations: establishing prayer, giving obligatory charity, and obeying Allah and His Messenger. These commands are followed by an extraordinary declaration of Allah's intention toward the Prophet's household – to remove from them all rijs (impurity) and to thoroughly purify them. This statement serves as both a reassurance and a reminder of their elevated status.
The purity of the Prophet's household is emphasized so strongly to counter any potential misconceptions or false accusations against them. Throughout history, some groups have alleged conspiracies or improprieties involving the Prophet's wives, particularly regarding Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her). This verse categorically rejects such accusations and establishes the absolute moral integrity of the Prophet's household.
“And remember what is recited in your houses of the verses of Allah and wisdom. Indeed, Allah is ever Subtle and Acquainted [with all things]." (33:34)”
The final instruction in this sequence commands them to remember and reflect upon the revelations and wisdom being conveyed in their homes. As witnesses to divine revelation in their households – hearing Jibreel (peace be upon him) deliver Allah's words to the Prophet – they carried a unique responsibility to preserve and transmit this knowledge. This verse acknowledges their privileged position as primary recipients of revealed knowledge and wisdom, entrusting them with its preservation and dissemination.
The special status accorded to the Mothers of Believers is accompanied by heightened responsibilities. They were expected to exemplify the highest standards of Islamic conduct, maintain the modesty befitting their station, engage in regular worship, and serve as repositories of divine knowledge. Their personal conduct would reflect directly on the message of Islam, which necessitated these additional guidelines beyond those given to ordinary believers.
The concluding statement that "Allah is ever Subtle and Acquainted [with all things]" reminds us that Allah's wisdom in establishing these guidelines stems from His perfect knowledge of human psychology and social dynamics, ensuring the optimal environment for the preservation and transmission of His final revelation.
