He Was Harmed More Than This

And once, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was distributing al-ghanāʾim, the spoils of war; he was giving them out. And one man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and said: inna hādhihi qismatun mā urīda bihā wajhu Allāh — the way you are dividing this wealth, you are not doing it for the sake of Allah. A man comes to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and tells him: you are not doing it for the sake of Allah. Imagine this: you are speaking to the Messenger of Allah, whom Allah (swt) chose, and he accused him of being unfair and unjust.

Obviously, the Messenger of Allah was upset, and the Companions said: we could see the anger on his face. But then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: raḥima Allāhu Mūsā, la-qad ūdhiya bi-akthara min hādhā fa-ṣabar — may Allah have mercy on Mūsā; he was harmed more than this, and he was patient. Mūsā went through a lot. Allah (swt) says about Mūsā: yā qawmi lima tuʾdhūnanī wa qad taʿlamūna annī rasūlu Allāhi ilaykum — O my people, why do you harm me, when you know that I am the messenger of Allah to you? So he went through a lot of harm; nevertheless he was patient, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: may Allah have mercy on him; he went through more than this, and he was patient.
