Out of the Darkness Into the Light
Sūrat Ibrāhīm is a Makkī sūrah, and therefore concerns itself with fundamentals. It comprises fifty-two verses, much like the sūrah before it — they seem all to fall within the fifties — and is arranged in seven sections. It too begins with Alif Lām Rā, and this opening is highly lyrical:
الٓر ۚ كِتَـٰبٌ أَنزَلْنَـٰهُ إِلَيْكَ لِتُخْرِجَ ٱلنَّاسَ مِنَ ٱلظُّلُمَـٰتِ إِلَى ٱلنُّورِ بِإِذْنِ رَبِّهِمْ إِلَىٰ صِرَٰطِ ٱلْعَزِيزِ ٱلْحَمِيدِ
“Alif, Lām, Rā. This is a book We have sent down to you, so that you may deliver the people, with the will of their Lord, out of all sorts of darkness into the light, leading them to the path of the Almighty, the Praiseworthy” (14:1)
Allah describes the Book: that this is a Book revealed to you so that you may bring people out of the darkness into the light, by the permission of their Lord, towards the path — the path of the Praiseworthy, the Mighty. There follows a passage concerning Allah (swt), and then one concerning Mūsā (peace be upon him).
