A Cure for What Is in the Breasts
Allah (swt) then says, in verse 57 — the Qur'an is treated at length here, and the passage well rewards a slow reading, in shāʾ Allāh:
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ قَدْ جَآءَتْكُم مَّوْعِظَةٌ مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ وَشِفَآءٌ لِّمَا فِى ٱلصُّدُورِ وَهُدًى وَرَحْمَةٌ لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
“O men, there has come to you an advice from your Lord, and a cure for the ailments of your hearts, and guidance and mercy for the believers.” (10:57)
O people, this counsel, this admonition, has come to you from your Lord — wa-shifāʾun limā fī al-ṣudūr — and it is also a cure for what ails the heart: all the turbulence within it, its misgivings, its fright, its depression, its various anxieties. The Qur'an is a shifāʾ.
How is it a shifāʾ? By being read. Anyone in turbulence and anxiety who reads the Qur'an will find enough in it to draw the mind away from its trouble, enough to cure the ailments of the heart. This may be tried, and it comes with a guarantee. Take up a Qur'an, begin to understand it, and it will become clear how many other things there are in the Qur'an from which a lesson can be taken, how much there is from which to benefit.
