The Friends of Allah
A very prominent verse, and one that everybody should take to heart, is verse 62:
أَلَآ إِنَّ أَوْلِيَآءَ ٱللَّهِ لَا خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا هُمْ يَحْزَنُونَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَكَانُوا۟ يَتَّقُونَ لَهُمُ ٱلْبُشْرَىٰ فِى ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنْيَا وَفِى ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ ۚ لَا تَبْدِيلَ لِكَلِمَـٰتِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ هُوَ ٱلْفَوْزُ ٱلْعَظِيمُ
“Listen, the friends of Allah shall have no fear, nor shall they grieve. -those who have believed and have been fearful of Allah. For them there is the good news in the worldly life and in the Hereafter: there is no change in the words of Allah.That is the great achievement.” (10:62–64)
The friends of Allah: no fear is upon them, and they shall never grieve. Trouble they will certainly meet. They may suffer an accident; they may lose something; they may be imprisoned. But their hearts are so content, so satisfied, that they pass through it with ease, māshāʾAllāh. This is known from the accounts of people who suffered for a cause; Allah grants them this on account of that cause, the cause of Islam.
Alladhīna āmanū wa-kānū yattaqūn: īmān and taqwā, faith and God-fearingness. The first is to have īmān, to believe. God-fearingness, however, consists in doing what Allah commands us to do, abstaining as far as possible from what He forbids, and making tawbah whenever we do fall into it — striving, in short, to be as regular as possible. That is the only way to obtain that forgiveness and to inculcate it in our hearts. For them is the bushrā in al-ḥayāt al-dunyā and in the ākhirah: for them are glad tidings in this world and in the Hereafter.
