ʿAbd al-Qays

And then there was the delegation of Banū ʿAbd al-Qays; these were from the eastern parts of the Arabian Peninsula, the extreme east of the Arabian Peninsula. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) told them: āmurukum bi-arbaʿ wa anhākum ʿan arbaʿ: al-īmānu bi-llāh — hal tadrūna mā al-īmānu bi-llāh? — shahādatu an lā ilāha illā Allāh, wa iqāmu al-ṣalāh, wa ītāʾu al-zakāh, wa ṣawmu Ramaḍān, wa an tuʾaddū min al-maghānimi al-khums; wa anhākum ʿan arbaʿ: mā yuntabadhu fī al-dubbāʾi wa al-naqīri wa al-ḥantami wa al-muzaffat (al-Bukhārī 53). The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: I command you with four things, and I warn you against four. I command you to believe in Allah — and do you know what believing in Allah means? To testify that there is no one worthy of worship but Allah; to establish the ṣalāh; to pay the zakāh; to fast Ramaḍān; and to give one-fifth of the booty — because they were going to fight fī sabīl Allāh, and the rule is that when you gain any spoils of war, you have to give one-fifth of them to the leader. And then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) told them: and I warn you against four things — and these were four different types of container that they used for making their alcohol. So they were told not to drink alcohol, and also not to use those containers, to get them out of the habit of drinking.
