Banū Tamīm

And then there was the delegation that came from Banū Tamīm. They came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), and he gave them glad tidings — this is in al-Bukhārī (3190): accept the glad tidings, O Banū Tamīm. They said: O Messenger of Allah, we have heard that; now give us something. We do not want good news; we do not want glad tidings; we want you to give us something. So the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) did not like that. And then there were people who came from Yemen, so he said to them: accept the glad tidings, since Banū Tamīm did not accept them. They said: we accept them, O Messenger of Allah.

Anyway, when a delegation came, it was the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) who would appoint a leader from among them. So when Banū Tamīm came, there were two major leaders among them: one was al-Aqraʿ ibn Ḥābis, and the other was al-Qaʿqāʿ ibn Maʿbad ibn Zurārah. So it says in al-Bukhārī (4367) that Abū Bakr suggested to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) that he appoint al-Qaʿqāʿ ibn Maʿbad as their leader. ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb said: no, appoint al-Aqraʿ ibn Ḥābis. Abū Bakr became angry and said: you only said that to go against my opinion. ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb said: I did not do it to go against your opinion. And then they started arguing with each other, and their voices became loud, and that is when Allah (ʿazza wa jall) revealed:

O you who have believed, do not put yourselves before Allah and His Messenger, but fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Hearing and Knowing. This is the first ayah of Sūrat al-Ḥujurāt.
