The Madinan Period II, Part 10: The Conquest of Makkah
Section 12 of 14 · The Life of the Prophet Muhammad: The Madinan Period, Part Two
Umm Hāniʾ
Umm Hāniʾ is the sister of ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib (may Allah be pleased with them all). Two of her in-laws sought refuge with her. ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib came in and said: I will kill them. Umm Hāniʾ had them hide in her place, and then she went to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), who was bathing — Fāṭimah (may Allah be pleased with her) was screening him — and he was bathing from a container that still had traces of dough in it. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) welcomed her and greeted her; he greeted her very warmly, and then he said: what has brought you? She said: the son of my mother says that he will kill the two men to whom I have given protection. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: qad ajarnā man ajarti yā Umma Hāniʾ — we give protection to those you have given protection, Umm Hāniʾ. So the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) approved her protection and spared the lives of her two in-laws.
And Umm Hāniʾ saw the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) pray eight rakʿahs, every two rakʿahs separately (al-Bukhārī 357). So the scholars have a difference of opinion: are these rakʿahs Ṣalāt al-Ḍuḥā, or are they the prayer of conquest? Some of them said it is the prayer of conquest, because no one reported them except Umm Hāniʾ, on this particular day, which was the day of the opening of Makkah; while some of them say they are Ṣalāt al-Ḍuḥā, because the narration says that he prayed them at the time of ḍuḥā.
