The Released Ones

And then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said to the people of Quraysh: what do you think I will do to you? The people of Quraysh said what they believed to be the case with Muḥammad (peace be upon him) — they knew him. They said: you are a noble brother and the son of a noble brother. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) told them: go; you are the freed ones. You are al-ṭulaqāʾ, you are freed — because you are in my hands, and by a point of my finger, by just waving my hand, I could order all of you to be executed, and that would happen, if I wanted it to happen. But he told them: you are free. And that is why the people who became Muslim at the conquest of Makkah are called al-ṭulaqāʾ, the freed ones: because the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) is the one who freed them; he released them — you are the released ones. Probably the word released is more accurate: you are the released ones. Go; you are the released ones.
