Juz 15: Al-Isrāʾ to Al-Kahf 74

Section 7 of 18 · Tafsir of the Qur’an · Mufti Abdul Rahman Mangera

7. Honoring of Mankind (Bani Adam)

Among the profound themes in Surah Al-Isra is Allah (swt)'s declaration of the elevated status of mankind above other creations. This declaration comes in a verse that speaks to the inherent dignity bestowed upon the children of Adam:

وَلَقَدْ كَرَّمْنَا بَنِي آدَمَ

“And We have certainly honored the children of Adam." (Al-Isra 17:70)”

This profound statement establishes a fundamental principle in Islamic theology—that human beings possess an inherent nobility and dignified position within creation. Allah (swt) has ennobled mankind above all other creatures, not because of wealth, lineage, or physical attributes, but simply through the status of being human.

The honoring of mankind is manifested in several ways mentioned in this verse. First, Allah (swt) endowed humans with the faculty of intellect, allowing them to comprehend complex matters, develop sciences, and distinguish between right and wrong. Second, humans were given the best physical form, as mentioned elsewhere in the Quran.

Allah (swt) further states:

وَحَمَلْنَاهُمْ فِي الْبَرِّ وَالْبَحْرِ

“And We have carried them on land and sea." (Al-Isra 17:70)”

This refers to how Allah (swt) has facilitated human travel and exploration, enabling mankind to traverse the earth's terrain and cross seas. From camels and horses of ancient times to modern vehicles and ships, Allah (swt) has made the earth subservient to human needs. This subservience extends to the resources of the earth that have been placed at humanity's disposal.

The verse continues:

وَرَزَقْنَاهُم مِّنَ الطَّيِّبَاتِ

“And We have provided for them of the good things." (Al-Isra 17:70)”

Allah (swt) has provided humans with lawful, pure sustenance and blessed them with the ability to enjoy these provisions. From the various types of foods, drinks, clothing, and shelter, Allah (swt) has ensured that humans can satisfy their needs through these provisions.

The culmination of this verse powerfully states:

وَفَضَّلْنَاهُمْ عَلَىٰ كَثِيرٍ مِّمَّنْ خَلَقْنَا تَفْضِيلًا

“And We have preferred them over many of those whom We have created, with a marked preferment." (Al-Isra 17:70)”

This divine honor extends to all humans regardless of their faith, race, color, or social standing. Every human being has this inherent dignity by virtue of being from the children of Adam (as). This universal dignity forms the basis for many ethical principles in Islam, including the prohibition of wrongful killing, respect for human remains, and the obligation to treat all humans with basic dignity.

This concept of human dignity has profound implications for how we understand our role in creation. It necessitates that we recognize the value in every human being, while simultaneously acknowledging the responsibility that comes with such honor. Humans are expected to fulfill their role as Allah's representatives on earth, as indicated in other parts of the Quran where mankind is described as khalifah (vicegerent).

The dignity bestowed upon humans by Allah (swt) should inspire us to live up to this honor by cultivating noble character, seeking beneficial knowledge, and treating fellow humans with respect and compassion. When we recognize that every person has been honored by Allah (swt), regardless of their worldly status, it transforms how we interact with others and how we perceive our own worth.

This Divine honoring should also remind us of our purpose and potential. We have been elevated not for self-aggrandizement, but to fulfill our covenant with Allah (swt) and to establish His worship and justice on earth.
