A Book in Which Is Your Own Mention

Laqad anzalnā ilaykum kitāban fīhi dhikrukum: We have sent down to you a book in which is your own mention — a book that speaks of you. Will you not then think and understand? What exactly is happening here?

As to the muʿjizāt, how could there be a greater muʿjizah, a greater miracle, than the Qur'an? There is nothing greater. The Qur'an is the greatest muʿjizah because it is the living miracle. When the water gushed from the fingers of the Prophet (peace be upon him), and when one pot of food was enough for a whole army — that was very much of its time. It is hard for us to see and observe it. But the Qur'an is something that continues, and this āyah is clarifying that very point.

What Allah (swt) is saying is that one of the ways of the inimitability of the Qur'an, of its challenging nature, its unique nature, its miraculous nature, is that the Qur'an is as a mirror for everyone. Whoever opens his heart and reads the Qur'an will understand where he stands in his beliefs, in his notions of life, in his conceptions of the various things of the world, in his akhlāq and character, and in his aʿmāl and his deeds. He will be able to see where we stand in these things; he may see his own face in it.
