Dhū al-Bijādayn

ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd says: in the middle of the night, during the Battle of Tabūk, I saw a torch, so I followed it, and I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), Abū Bakr and ʿUmar. ʿAbdullāh al-Muzanī had died, and they had prepared his grave, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was the one who went down into his grave, while Abū Bakr and ʿUmar were the ones lowering the body to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). And the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was telling them: bring your brother down; and they were handing the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) the body of Dhū al-Bijādayn. Dhū al-Bijādayn was a very poor man, unknown, simple; and it was Abū Bakr, ʿUmar, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) himself who were preparing his janāzah, and ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd was watching. And then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was the one who put him in the grave with his own hands, and then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Allāhumma innī qad amsaytu rāḍiyan ʿanhu fa-rḍa ʿanh — O Allah, I am pleased with him, so, O Allah, be pleased with him. ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: yā laytanī kuntu ṣāḥiba al-ḥufrah — I wish that I had been the one in that grave. To have this blessing — the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) making that duʿāʾ for you, and holding you in his hands, and putting you in the grave — is such a great blessing. ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd said: I wish it had been me.
