Hypocrites and Their Alliance with Enemies of Islam
In the concluding portion of Surah Al-Mujadilah (verses 14-22), Allah (swt) addresses the critical issue of the hypocrites (munafiqeen) who outwardly professed Islam while secretly aligning themselves with the enemies of Islam. This section reveals their true nature and the severity of betraying the Muslim community by forming alliances with those who opposed Allah (swt) and His Messenger (peace be upon him).
The hypocrites in Madinah had established secret relationships with certain Jewish tribes who were hostile to the Muslims, despite the covenant that had been established for peaceful coexistence. Allah (swt) exposes this treacherous alliance:
أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى الَّذِينَ تَوَلَّوْا قَوْمًا غَضِبَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِم مَّا هُم مِّنكُمْ وَلَا مِن
“Have you not seen those who have friendship with a people with whom Allah is angry. They are neither of you nor of them. They swear false oaths while they know.” (58:14)
