Juz 20: An-Naml 56 to Al-ʿAnkabūt 45

Section 2 of 18 · Tafsir of the Qur’an · Mufti Abdul Rahman Mangera

2. Five Evidences for Allah's Existence and Power

At the beginning of Juz 20, Allah (swt) presents five compelling evidences of His existence, sovereignty, and unique right to worship. These evidences are drawn from observable phenomena in the natural world, making them accessible to all people regardless of time, place, or level of education.

The first evidence relates to the creation of the heavens and earth, and the life-giving properties of rain:

"Who created the heavens and the earth, and sent down for you water from the sky? Then We caused to grow with it gardens, full of beauty, whereof it was not possible for you to grow the trees. Is there any god along with Allah? No, but they are a people who equate (others with Allah)."

(An-Naml 27:60)

This verse emphasizes Allah's creative power and sustenance of life through rainfall. The rhetorical question "Is there any god along with Allah?" follows each evidence, challenging polytheists to justify their association of partners with Allah despite His obvious unique power.

The second evidence concerns the stability of the earth and the balance of natural systems:

"Who made the earth a place to rest, and made rivers flowing through it, and placed firm mountains on it, and put a barrier between two seas? Is there any god along with Allah? No, but most of them do not know."

(An-Naml 27:61)

This verse draws attention to the remarkable stability and balance evident in earth's systems – from its suitability as a habitat for life to the intricate water cycle and geological features that maintain environmental equilibrium.

The third evidence relates to Allah's response to those in distress:

"Who responds to a distressed one when he calls Him, and removes the distress, and makes you successors of the earth? Is there any god along with Allah? Little you reflect!"

(An-Naml 27:62)

This appeals to the universal human experience of finding relief after sincere supplication in times of desperation – a phenomenon that transcends cultural and religious boundaries.

The fourth evidence concerns guidance through darkness:

"Who guides you in the darkness of the land and the sea, and who sends the winds bearing good news before His mercy? Is there any god along with Allah? Exalted is Allah above what they associate with Him."

(An-Naml 27:63)

This verse speaks to the innate guidance systems Allah has established in creation and the mercy evident in natural cycles like weather patterns that sustain life.

The fifth evidence relates to the origin of creation and its sustenance:

"Who originated creation, then will reproduce it, and who gives you provision from the sky and the earth? Is there any god along with Allah? Say, 'Bring your proof if you are truthful.'"

(An-Naml 27:64)

This final evidence concerns the origin of existence itself and the continuous sustenance of all creation – fundamental questions that ultimately point to a single Creator and Sustainer.

After presenting these five compelling evidences, Allah (swt) challenges the polytheists to bring their own proofs if they are truthful. This method of argumentation engages human intellect and invites reflection, making it clear that true faith is not blind following but reasoned conviction based on observable reality. The repetitive pattern of these verses, with each ending in a rhetorical question, creates a powerful cumulative effect that renders any position other than monotheism (tawhid) intellectually untenable.
