13. Signs in Nature: Water, Plants, and Sustenance
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala draws our attention to numerous signs in nature that reflect His creative power and wisdom. When we observe the world around us—the skies, the earth, the plants, and all that sustains us—we find overwhelming evidence of divine design.
In Surah An-Nahl, Allah emphasizes these natural phenomena as manifestations of His bounty. The surah is appropriately called "The Bee," but it is also known as "Suratul Ni'am" (The Chapter of Bounties) because it enumerates many of Allah's blessings upon humanity. Throughout these verses, Allah repeatedly concludes His descriptions with phrases like "Indeed in this is a sign for people who reflect" or "for people who understand," directly addressing those who contemplate His creation.
Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala speaks about the life-giving properties of water, a critical element for all existence:
وَهُوَ الَّذِي أَنزَلَ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مَاءً ۖ لَّكُم مِّنْهُ شَرَابٌ وَمِنْهُ شَجَرٌ فِيهِ تُسِيمُونَ
“And He is the One who sent down water from the heavens, from which you have your drink, and out of which (grow) trees on which you pasture your cattle.”
The mechanism of rain itself is a marvel of divine engineering. Water evaporates from oceans, forms into clouds, and is transported by winds to distant lands where it descends as rain, providing hydration and nourishing crops. This irrigation system operates on a global scale without human intervention. Without this natural cycle, humanity would lack the capacity to transport such vast quantities of water to where it is needed.
Allah further emphasizes His role as the ultimate provider of all bounties:
وَإِن تَعُدُّوا نِعْمَةَ اللَّهِ لَا تُحْصُوهَا ۗ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَغَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ
“And if you count Allah's blessings, you cannot count them all. Surely, Allah is Most-Forgiving, Very-Merciful.”
Even if we dedicated our lives to enumerating Allah's favors upon us, we could never comprehensively list them all. Consider just the biological functioning of the human body—a miracle of intricate systems working in harmony. When any part of this system malfunctions, even temporarily as with constipation or indigestion, we experience discomfort that affects our entire being. Yet Allah has designed the body with remarkable self-healing capabilities, allowing it to recover even after abuse or illness.
The seas and oceans are mentioned as another source of Allah's provision:
وَهُوَ الَّذِي سَخَّرَ الْبَحْرَ لِتَأْكُلُوا مِنْهُ لَحْمًا طَرِيًّا وَتَسْتَخْرِجُوا مِنْهُ حِلْيَةً تَلْبَسُونَهَا
“And He is the One who has subjugated the sea, so that you may eat fresh meat from it, and may take out from it ornaments that you wear.”
From the vast oceans, Allah provides fresh fish for sustenance and precious materials like pearls for adornment. Additionally, He enables ships to navigate these waters, facilitating trade and travel between distant lands.
Allah's signs are evident in the alternation of night and day, in the sun, moon, and stars, all following precise orbits and serving humanity in countless ways. Even the variation of colors found in creation—the diverse hues of plants, animals, minerals, and landscapes—serves as evidence of divine artistry and wisdom.
These verses invite us to engage deeply with the Qur'an, not merely reading or listening passively, but reflecting on its meanings and implications. Through this contemplation of Allah's signs in nature, we develop gratitude for His endless bounties and strengthen our faith in His perfect wisdom.
