4. Dreams and Divine Assistance at Badr

The divine assistance granted to the Muslims during the Battle of Badr took multiple forms, including through dreams and psychological reinforcement. These supernatural elements played a crucial role in bolstering the Muslims' morale while simultaneously undermining the confidence of their opponents.

Allah (swt) reveals how He showed the enemy as few in the Prophet's dream:

إِذْ يُرِيكَهُمُ اللَّهُ فِي مَنَامِكَ قَلِيلًا ۖ وَلَوْ أَرَاكَهُمْ كَثِيرًا لَّفَشِلْتُمْ وَلَتَنَازَعْتُمْ فِي الْأَمْرِ وَلَـٰكِنَّ اللَّهَ سَلَّمَ ۗ إِنَّهُ عَلِيمٌ بِذَاتِ الصُّدُورِ

“When Allah showed them to you in your dream as few in number. And had He shown them to you as many, you would have been discouraged, and would have disputed in the matter. But Allah saved (you). Surely, Allah is fully aware of what lies in the hearts." [8:43]”

Prior to the battle, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) received a divine dream in which he saw the Quraysh forces as few in number. This vision was strategically important, as Allah (swt) explains that had He shown the enemy as numerous, the Muslims might have become demoralized and fallen into dispute regarding whether to engage in battle. Divine wisdom thus manifested in presenting the enemy as manageable, preserving the Muslims' courage and unity of purpose.

Allah's assistance extended beyond the Prophet's dream to affect the perception of both armies during the actual confrontation:

وَإِذْ يُرِيكُمُوهُمْ إِذِ الْتَقَيْتُمْ فِي أَعْيُنِكُمْ قَلِيلًا وَيُقَلِّلُكُمْ فِي أَعْيُنِهِمْ لِيَقْضِيَ اللَّهُ أَمْرًا كَانَ مَفْعُولًا ۗ وَإِلَى اللَّهِ تُرْجَعُ الْأُمُورُ

“And when, at the time you met each other, He showed them to you as few in your eyes, and showed you as few in their eyes, so that Allah might accomplish what was destined to be done. To Allah all matters are returned." [8:44]”

This remarkable divine intervention operated on two levels simultaneously. First, Allah (swt) made the Quraysh appear fewer in number to the Muslims, which bolstered their confidence and willingness to engage in battle. Second, and perhaps more surprisingly, Allah (swt) also reduced the apparent number of Muslims in the eyes of the Quraysh.

This dual intervention seems counterintuitive at first glance – wouldn't it have been more advantageous for the Muslims to appear numerous to intimidate the enemy? However, Allah's wisdom transcends human calculation. By making the Muslims appear fewer to the Quraysh, Allah (swt) ensured that the disbelievers would not flee from battle but would engage with confidence, only to face defeat. This arrangement ensured that what Allah (swt) had destined would come to pass – the decisive confrontation between truth and falsehood.

The psychological dimension of warfare receives particular emphasis in these verses. While conventional military strategy often focuses on displaying greater numbers to intimidate opponents, divine strategy operated according to a more sophisticated plan: ensuring both sides entered the battle with sufficient confidence to engage fully, thus fulfilling Allah's decree that the truth would prevail through a clear, decisive victory.
