10. The Changing Rules of Engagement

As the Muslim community evolved and faced different circumstances, Allah (swt) adjusted certain rules of engagement to accommodate their developing situation. One significant example of this is found in the changing ratio of fighters required before Muslims were permitted to withdraw from battle.

Initially, Allah (swt) had established a high standard of endurance for the believers, requiring them to stand firm against overwhelming odds:

This verse established that Muslim fighters were expected to face opponents ten times their number, with twenty Muslims expected to overcome two hundred disbelievers, and one hundred Muslims to overcome one thousand. This was an extraordinary standard that reflected the spiritual strength of the early Muslim community and the divine assistance promised to them. The key factor mentioned is sabr (patience and perseverance), indicating that spiritual fortitude was as essential as physical preparation.

However, recognizing the difficulty of this requirement, Allah (swt) later modified this rule:

In this verse, Allah (swt) reduced the required ratio from one-to-ten to one-to-two, acknowledging human limitations. This divine consideration demonstrates Allah's compassion and realistic expectations of His servants. Muslims were now obligated to stand firm only when facing up to twice their number, rather than ten times as initially required.
