Aqida Tahawiyya, Lesson 8: Intercession, the Covenant and the Divine Decree

Section 16 of 24 · Aqeedah · Mufti Abdul Rahman Mangera

The Mūsā Whom Jibrīl Brought Up

For example, there is a poem that is related: idhā lam yuktabi al-marʾu saʿīdan min al-azali, fa-khāba man rabbāhu wa khāba al-muʾammilu; fa-Mūsā alladhī rabbāhu Jibrīlu kāfirun, wa Mūsā alladhī rabbāhu Firʿawnu mursalu.

That is: if a person has not been designated as saʿīd, as fortunate, from eternity (in the will of Allah, in the decree of Allah, he has not been decreed as such), then regardless of who nurtures that person, or brings them up, or trains that person, it will all go to waste. It will all be futile.

Then come the examples that are given: that the Mūsā who was brought up by Jibrīl became a kāfir. This refers to al-Sāmirī; it refers to that one individual. It is said that he was in a wreck, with his mother, and that he survived by hanging on to something, or by being on something. And it is related (how strong the report is remains uncertain, but it is related) that Jibrīl (peace be upon him) fed him, brought him up, took a special interest in him, and fed him and brought him up. He became a kāfir later on, despite Jibrīl (peace be upon him) having brought him up. On the other hand, there was Pharaoh, who brought up Mūsā: a kāfir, and not just a kāfir, but somebody who called himself God. And Mūsā became a murshid*****, meaning a messenger of Allah (swt).

So we pray to Allah (swt) that Allah make us among the suʿadāʾ; that Allah take us and push us into that. Because for Him it is just a decree; for us it is a lifelong struggle. It is a lifelong struggle, but for Him it is just a decree, just a decision. We make duʿāʾ to Allah (swt) that, since we have come this far, Allah take us into paradise.
