Twelve Springs

So with Banū Isrāʾīl, Allah (swt) provided them with this food — al-mann and al-salwā is the food — and then Allah (swt) provided them with the shade. What else did they need? They needed water. So Allah (swt) says: and remember when Mūsā asked for water for his people. The people came and asked Mūsā: we want water. So Mūsā made istisqāʾ; he asked Allah (swt) to give them water.

Mūsā asked Allah (swt) to provide Banū Isrāʾīl with water. Allah (swt) told Mūsā: strike the stone with your stick, and twelve springs of water are going to gush forth — for every tribe of Banū Isrāʾīl, its own spring.

So — the stick that Mūsā had. Remember, a long time ago, Allah (swt) said to Mūsā: wa mā tilka bi-yamīnika yā Mūsā — what is that in your hand, O Mūsā? But Allah (swt) knows the stick better than Mūsā.

So Allah (swt) provided Banū Isrāʾīl with the food, al-mann and al-salwā; and the shade, wa ẓallalnā ʿalaykumu al-ghamām; and Allah (swt) also provided them with the water.
