The Sons of Shayṭān, and Where the Account Breaks Off

Do you know, O Muḥammad, Shayṭān went on, that I have a son named Atam? His task is to urinate in the ear of anyone who sleeps without having performed the night prayer, so that its warmth keeps him asleep — for otherwise no one could sleep through leaving that prayer undone. I have another son named Mutaqadeen, whose task is to make known, and to praise, the prayers and good deeds that people do in secret for Allah's sake — for Allah has promised a hundredfold reward for a good deed done sincerely and in secret, but once it is made known and receives the praise of other people, Allah withholds ninety-nine parts of that promised reward, leaving only the one.

He went on to speak of his other sons — and there the account, as it survives, breaks off, with more of them still to be told. What is set down here is the whole of what he said on this occasion.

The closing supplication asked that Allah bless all present with beneficial knowledge, increase their good deeds, make them among the sincere, and grant them certainty, awe of Him and good character; that He keep them always in the service of His religion and of those obedient to Him; that He keep those they love upon His path; that He allow them to leave this world in a state of faith, and to meet the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) in Jannah as his neighbour. And the last of the supplication was praise belonging to Allah, Lord of all the worlds.
