What Happens to Shayṭān During Worship

The Messenger of Allah then asked: what happens to you, accursed one, when my people perform their prayer? He answered: I shake and tremble as though stricken with malaria, for I see them raised in blessing, in barakah, in power, each time they prostrate to Allah. And when they fast? My hands and my feet are bound until they break their fast; I cannot touch them. And when they gather at Hajj, at the House of their Lord? I lose my wits; I go mad. And when they recite the Qur'an? I melt like lead turned to hot liquid in the fire. And when they give zakāh and ṣadaqah? I am torn to pieces, as though the giver had taken a saw and cut me into four — for there are four blessings the giver receives: an abundance of barakah, love and respect from Allah's creatures, a shield from the hellfire, and relief from distress and trouble.
