The One Measure of a Life
Whatever happens in this world, if the pleasure of Allah, His riḍā, is not attained, the whole of it is futile — wealth, learning, standing as a scholar or a shaykh, political power, none of it excepted. A life that does not reach that pleasure has been, in the end, a life spent for nothing.

* Kept as said. The mountain named in this passage as a mountain of Jahannam, opposite Uḥud and shaking beneath the Prophet (peace be upon him), is Mount ʿAyr, the black mountain facing Uḥud — not Uḥud itself, of which he had just said "it loves us and we love it."
** Kept as said. Al-Targhīb wa al-Tarhīb means The Encouragement [to Good] and the Discouragement [from Evil]; targhīb is encouragement, not discouragement.
