Closing at the Well

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) ordered that the bodies of the twenty-four chiefs of Quraysh be thrown into this well. It was his habit that he would stay at the site of a battle for three days before he would leave. When he was about to leave the site of the Battle of Badr, he visited al-Qalīb, this well in which the twenty-four leaders of disbelief were buried, and he spoke to them: "Would you now be pleased to have obeyed Allah and His Messenger? We have found that what our Lord promised us was true — have you found what your Lord promised you to be true?" Abū Bakr said, "O Messenger of Allah, why do you speak to bodies that have no spirits in them?" The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "By Him who holds the soul of Muhammad in His hand, you do not hear what I say any better than they do" (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, no. 1370). Allah, the Almighty and Majestic, made them hear what the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was telling them, and this was to add to their punishment.
