ʿAbdullāh ibn Rawāḥah and Yusayr ibn Rizām

The next sariyyah was led by ʿAbdullāh ibn Rawāḥah, and they were sent to Yusayr ibn Rizām al-Yahūdī, a Jew. There were reports that he was trying to work out a deal with Fazārah to attack the Muslims while they were in Khaybar. So the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) sent ʿAbdullāh ibn Rawāḥah to bring him. What ʿAbdullāh ibn Rawāḥah did was to go to Yusayr and tell him that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) wanted to appoint him governor over Khaybar. Initially he resisted; then ʿAbdullāh ibn Rawāḥah kept on trying to convince him until he agreed, and he came along with thirty men, thirty of the Yahūd.

On the way back, Yusayr regretted his decision, and he tried to pull out the sword of ʿAbdullāh ibn Unays. ʿAbdullāh ibn Unays was not taken by surprise, and he was able to manoeuvre and get away from Yusayr ibn Rizām. And then the Muslims saw the move of Yusayr and realised what he was doing, so every Muslim turned around to his Jewish companion. Because the Muslims were thirty, and the Yahūd were also the same number, every Muslim had a Jewish companion with him, riding on the same camel. So now every Muslim turned around to his companion and executed him — except that one of the Yahūd succeeded in running away. So all of them were killed, including their leader, Yusayr ibn Rizām.
