3. The Unlettered Prophet as a Sign | Verses: Al-'Ankabut 29:47-51
After emphasizing the importance of prayer, Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala directs our attention to one of the most compelling proofs of Prophet Muhammad's (peace be upon him) prophethood - his unlettered status. This characteristic represented a clear, undeniable miracle that validated his message to the people of Makkah who knew him well.
In verse 48, Allah emphasizes this extraordinary sign:
وَمَا كُنتَ تَتْلُو مِن قَبْلِهِ مِن كِتَابٍ وَلَا تَخُطُّهُ بِيَمِينِكَ إِذًا لَّارْتَابَ الْمُبْطِلُونَ
“You have never been reciting any book before this, nor have you been writing it with your right hand; otherwise, the adherents of falsehood would have raised doubts.”
This verse highlights the fact that Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) had never read or written any book before the revelation of the Quran. The people of Makkah knew this reality intimately. He had lived among them for forty years before receiving revelation, and they recognized him as al-Ummi (the unlettered one). Had he been a literate person who studied previous scriptures, his detractors would have immediately pointed this out as evidence that he had fabricated the Quran based on his readings.
The brilliance of this divine arrangement becomes apparent: if the Prophet (peace be upon him) had been literate, those intent on rejecting the message could have claimed he simply learned the teachings from other sources. Instead, the unlettered Prophet brought forth a book containing profound wisdom, eloquent expression, and knowledge of historical events narrated in previous scriptures - a clear indication that the source was divine revelation rather than human learning.
In verse 49, Allah further strengthens this argument:
بَلْ هُوَ آيَاتٌ بَيِّنَاتٌ فِي صُدُورِ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْعِلْمَ وَمَا يَجْحَدُ بِآيَاتِنَا إِلَّا الظَّالِمُونَ
“But these are clear signs in the hearts of those who are given knowledge. And none denies our signs except the wrongdoers.”
This powerful verse reveals that the true place for the Quran's verses is not merely in books or written form, but in the hearts and chests of those who possess knowledge. The greatest miracle of the Quran is not simply its written form but its ability to transform hearts, resonate in souls, and establish itself firmly in the consciousness of believers. This is why memorization of the Quran has been a continuous tradition from the time of the Prophet (peace be upon him) until today.
The verse also clarifies that rejection of these clear signs comes only from those who are bent on wrongdoing - those who recognize the truth but refuse to accept it due to pride, stubbornness, or worldly interests.
The disbelievers continued to demand physical miracles, unwilling to accept the greatest miracle before them: the Quran itself, revealed through an unlettered Prophet. Allah addresses this in verse 50-51:
وَقَالُوا لَوْلَا أُنزِلَ عَلَيْهِ آيَاتٌ مِّن رَّبِّهِ قُلْ إِنَّمَا الْآيَاتُ عِندَ اللَّهِ وَإِنَّمَا أَنَا نَذِيرٌ مُّبِينٌ
“And they say, 'Why have signs not been sent down to him from his Lord?' Say, 'Signs are only with Allah, and I am only a clear warner.'”
أَوَلَمْ يَكْفِهِمْ أَنَّا أَنزَلْنَا عَلَيْكَ الْكِتَابَ يُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِمْ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَرَحْمَةً وَذِكْرَىٰ لِقَوْمٍ يُؤْمِنُونَ
“Is it not sufficient for them that We have sent down to you the Book that is being recited to them? Surely, in it there is mercy and advice for a people who believe.”
Allah responds to their demands by pointing out that the greatest sign already exists among them - the Quran itself. This sacred text, containing guidance, wisdom, and a complete way of life, is the enduring miracle that continues to guide humanity. Unlike physical miracles that are witnessed by a limited audience in a specific time and place, the Quran remains an accessible miracle for all people across all generations until the Day of Judgment.
