He Was Grieved on Their Account
Lūṭ is seeing that these three men are not getting the point, and they're following him, and things are getting more difficult on him. Allah (swt) is describing to us the situation of Lūṭ:
وَلَمَّا جَآءَتْ رُسُلُنَا لُوطًا سِىٓءَ بِهِمْ وَضَاقَ بِهِمْ ذَرْعًا وَقَالَ هَـٰذَا يَوْمٌ عَصِيبٌ
“When Our emissaries (angels) came to LūT, he was saddened because of them, and his heart felt uneasy for their sake, and He said, “This is a very hard day.”” (11:77)
Wa lammā jāʾat rusulunā Lūṭan sīʾa bihim wa ḍāqa bihim dharʿan wa qāla hādhā yawmun ʿaṣīb. And when Our messengers came to Lūṭ, he was grieved on their account, and he was feeling pressure; he was feeling uncomfortable. Imagine the situation of Lūṭ, a very difficult situation. He needs to protect these three men. And then he took them into his house, and he closed the doors. Nobody saw them.
So who leaked the news? The wife of Lūṭ. The wife of Lūṭ left, and she went to the people of Lūṭ, and she told them that there are three handsome men in our house. She was collaborating with them.
ضَرَبَ ٱللَّهُ مَثَلًا لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ ٱمْرَأَتَ نُوحٍ وَٱمْرَأَتَ لُوطٍ ۖ كَانَتَا تَحْتَ عَبْدَيْنِ مِنْ عِبَادِنَا صَـٰلِحَيْنِ فَخَانَتَاهُمَا فَلَمْ يُغْنِيَا عَنْهُمَا مِنَ ٱللَّهِ شَيْـًٔا وَقِيلَ ٱدْخُلَا ٱلنَّارَ مَعَ ٱلدَّٰخِلِينَ
“Allah has cited for the disbelievers the example of the wife of NūH and the wife of LūT. Both were married with two of Our righteous servants, but betrayed them. So they could not benefit them against Allah at all, and it was said, “Enter the Fire along with those who enter.”” (66:10)
Ḍaraba Allāhu mathalan li-lladhīna kafarū. Allah (swt) says: the example of the non-believer woman is the wife of Nūḥ and the wife of Lūṭ. She was collaborating with the people of Lūṭ, and she is the one who leaked out the information that these three men are in town. She went and told them this. The news was spreading, and the crowds were gathering in the streets. They were coming out of their clubs, rushing in the streets; crowds are rushing in the streets.
