The Filth of Sin

Beyond wuḍūʾ and ghusl, and beyond physical filth of the kind just described, two further kinds of najis concern the limbs, and the heart, and the sirr, the innermost heart. The mouth, the hands, the feet, the ears, the stomach, and every other limb of the body must be protected from the filth of sinning; guarding the limbs and organs of the body from maḥārim Allāh, from what Allah (swt) has forbidden, is likewise compulsory — this too is a form of ṭahārah of the inner.

Where the limbs have become filthy with sin, an agent must be used to clean them, and that agent is called tawbah. Where a person is physically filthy, Ajax is used, or Jif, or Morning Fresh, or whatever other detergent, whatever ṣābūn, whatever soap comes to hand — there is no difficulty in that, for physical cleanliness. But the other cleanliness, the hygiene required of the unseen kind, can be cleansed only through the process of tawbah; without tawbah, such things simply do not become clean. With istighfār and tawbah, and the paying of whatever kaffārah is necessary, these things are cleansed — nothing less will do it.
